Family Benefits in Luxembourg
Luxembourg is one of the European countries offering the most generous family benefits. All official information is available on Guichet.lu, the official portal of the Luxembourg government, and on the website of the Caisse pour l'Avenir des Enfants (CAE).
The Birth Allowance
In Luxembourg, a birth allowance is paid in 3 instalments:
- 1st instalment: approx. €580 — paid during the prenatal examination
- 2nd instalment: approx. €580 — paid at birth
- 3rd instalment: approx. €580 — paid during the postnatal examination
- Total: approx. €1,740 per child!
The Monthly Family Allowance
The CAE pays a monthly allowance for each child:
- Basic amount: approx. €265/month per child
- Paid from birth until 18 years old (or 25 years old if a student)
- No income conditions — all residents are eligible!
Maternity Leave
- Duration: 16 weeks (8 before + 8 after birth)
- Allowance: 100% of salary (capped at 5 times the minimum wage)
- Managed by the Caisse Nationale de Santé (CNS)
Parental Leave
Luxembourg offers very flexible parental leave:
- Duration: 4 or 6 months per parent (up to 12 months in total)
- Allowance: between €1,800 and €3,800/month depending on the chosen option
- Can be taken full-time or part-time

The Chèque-service accueil (Service Voucher for Childcare)
