Family allowances in French-speaking Belgium
In Belgium, family allowances are managed differently depending on the region. In Wallonia and Brussels, FAMIWAL and Iriscare manage family benefits. All official information is available on Belgium.be.
The birth premium
In French-speaking Belgium, a birth premium is paid for each child:
- Wallonia (FAMIWAL): approximately €1,395 for the 1st child (2026 amount)
- Brussels (Iriscare): approximately €1,115 for the 1st child
- The premium is paid automatically after birth declaration
Monthly allowances 2026
After birth, monthly allowances are paid until the age of 25 (if the child is studying). The basic amount is set at €188.89/month per child in 2026, with a supplement of €165.40 from the 3rd child:

Maternity leave in Belgium
- Duration: 15 weeks (1st birth) or 17 weeks (multiple birth)
- Allowance: 82% of gross salary for the first 30 days, then 75%
- Management: via your mutual insurance company (Mutualité Chrétienne, Solidaris, etc.)
Paternity leave
Since 2023, paternity leave in Belgium is 20 days to be taken within 4 months of birth. More info on Belgium.be.
