Family Allowances in Switzerland
In Switzerland, family allowances are governed by the Federal Law on Family Allowances (LAFam). They are managed by the Federal Social Insurance Office (FSIO). All official information is available on ch.ch, the official Swiss portal.
Types of allowances in Switzerland
1. Birth allowance
Some cantons pay a birth allowance. Amounts vary by canton:
- Vaud: approximately 1,500 CHF
- Geneva: approximately 1,000 CHF
- Fribourg: approximately 1,500 CHF
- Inquire with your cantonal family allowance fund
2. Child allowance
The federal minimum amount is 215 CHF/month per child up to 16 years old (or 25 years old if a student). Some cantons pay more:
- Geneva: 300 CHF/month
- Vaud: 215 CHF/month
- Valais: 215 CHF/month
3. Education allowance
From 16 years old and up to 25 years old if the child is in training: minimum 268 CHF/month.
Maternity leave in Switzerland
- Duration: 14 weeks (98 days)
- Compensation: 80% of average salary (maximum 220 CHF/day)
- Managed by Income Compensation Allowances (ICA)
Paternity leave
Since 2021, paternity leave in Switzerland is 10 working days to be taken within 6 months of birth. More info on ch.ch.
