What is the 1000 First Days program?
The 1000 First Days program is a French government initiative launched in 2020 under the impetus of the President of the Republic. It is based on a strong scientific conviction: the first 1000 days of life (from conception until the child's 2nd birthday) are the most crucial period for a human being's physical, cognitive, and emotional health.
Why 1000 days?
These 1000 days correspond to:
- 270 days of pregnancy (9 months)
- 730 days from birth to the child's 2nd birthday
According to Santé Publique France, it is during this period that the brain develops most rapidly and the foundations for future health are laid.
The 4 pillars of the program
1. Supporting parents from pregnancy
The program offers enhanced support from pregnancy: early prenatal interview, psychological support, birth preparation. Inquire with your midwife or on Ameli.fr.
2. Fostering parent-child bonding

3. Acting on the baby's environment

4. Supporting parents' mental health
The program recognizes the importance of parents' mental health. Psychological support systems are available via Service-Public.fr and PMI centers.
The official 1000 First Days app
The French government has launched a free mobile application, "1000 premiers jours," which supports parents week by week with personalized advice, information on baby's development, and practical resources. Download it for free on the App Store or Google Play.
