Tummy time: why it's essential and how to do it successfully with baby
Share
Tummy time is one of the most important activities for your baby’s development. However, many parents don't know how to do it correctly or why it's so crucial. Here’s everything you need to know.
What is tummy time?
Tummy time involves placing your baby on their stomach when they are awake and supervised. This position is different from sleeping—babies should always sleep on their backs, in accordance with recommendations from Health Canada and Naître et Grandir.
Why is tummy time so important?
- 💪 Strengthens neck, shoulder, and back muscles
- 🧠 Prevents plagiocephaly (flat head) caused by back sleeping
- 👣 Prepares for rolling, crawling, and walking
- 👁️ Stimulates vision and spatial perception
- 🦴 Develops hand-eye coordination
When should you start tummy time?
From the first few days after birth! Start with short sessions of 2 to 3 minutes, 2 to 3 times a day. Gradually increase to 30 minutes a day by 3 months.
How to make tummy time enjoyable?
1. Use a support roll
The Montessori crawl roll supports baby's chest and makes the position easier. Baby can rock on it while strengthening their muscles.
2. Place toys in front of your baby
Soft rattle balls placed in front of your baby encourage them to lift their head and reach out.
3. Use a playmat

4. Do it on your chest
Lie down and place your baby on your chest—skin-to-skin contact reassures them and motivates them to lift their head to see you.
Signs of baby's progress
- ✅ At 1 month: lifts head for a few seconds
- ✅ At 2 months: holds head at 45°
- ✅ At 4 months: pushes up on forearms
- ✅ At 6 months: starts to crawl
